Scottish Independence

Scotland will be holding a referendum in 2014 to determine whether they will seek independence from England.  This is very historically significant ending an approximate 1,000 year English rule - moreso it sets a precedent that could be followed in other regions of the world.

  1. I found this video awhile ago, CGPgrey is a great and credible source for loads of information. I encourage you to check him out. So check this one out about how Scotland joined Great Britain.

  2. It's understandable that Scotland would want independence from England because of the history between the two nations. Go ahead and watch the movie Braveheart to see a glimpse of Scotland's and England's historic relationship.

Being Scottish myself, I have a lot of Scottish family that do live in Scotland. They often talk about England in a similar way that we may talk about Americans, only much more hatefully. A lot of people can't let go of the past, even when they weren't even there (or alive) at the time. Also, as any person should be, Scottish people are incredibly proud to be Scottish and, again, it's understandable that they would want independence.

Of course, the desire for independence isn't just because of history. Independence would give Scotland a seat at the UN. (1) "Independence will [also] allow Scotland to cut business taxes (like Ireland) to promote economic growth."

It could almost be comparable to Quebec wanting independence from Canada. It's clear that most Canadians are against the idea, but there are people who really, strongly desire it.

One thing is certain: I'm looking forward to 2014.
