Week 1 - Current Events-(b)

This is related to the shooting in Quebec the other night during the PQ victory party.  It looks like another English/French divide could build up over the next few months/years.  New bills are being proposed that will dig up controversies of the past.  What are they?

What do you think about her victory?
When 52% of 50% of the population votes you in, does democracy really exist anymore ?

  1. This is my weekly post
I think that Premier Marois' victory marks a return to the archaic way of thinking that was more prominent in Canada's earlier days. Bill 101 is seen as a violation of human rights and threatens to reverse all of the progress made in Quebec in regards to language barriers and fair treatment of the English speaking community. If bill 101 is passed francophones and certain immigrant's will not be allowed to send their children to an English speaking CEGEP. (1) This infringes on our basic rights as Canadians. Both the English and French speaking communities across Canada deserve the right to educate their children in English or French, seeing as we are a bilingual country not a monolingual one.
"In a minority National Assembly, the Liberals and the CAQ could block any legislation to enact such policies, including Ms. Marois’ promise to revamp Bill 101 with new measures to force companies with fewer than 50 employees to operate in French, especially in the retail sector." (2)
The other part of this bill that deals with the retail sector is equally unjust, forcing smaller businesses made of primarily immigrants impossible to start up. This discrimination favours the mostly white, francophone communities of Quebec while making it very difficult for newcomers to Canada. Premier Marois has already shown herself to be a xenophobic, closed-minded view on the world and detrimental to Canadian culture and the lives of the English speaking in Quebec.
