Polar Bear Extinction

According to this article the polar bear will be an extinct species in the wild within the next 25 years.

Do you agree with this "yahoo" news claim? What are the causes of this extinction?  Can they be reversed? How? or why not?

  1. Yes, I agree with this "yahoo" news claim. This is because it is clear that the ice is melting elimiinating transportation for the polar bears and no transportaion means no food, causing a constant struggle for the bears. That's if they can manage to survive the poachers on the mid-land, two bears have already been shot and killed. It is even more of a struggle for the Russian polar bears than the Canadian ones because the pack ice is retreating much faster. The only way that this could be slowly reversed is if humans became more aware of the reprecussions of global warming and if they were concerned about it.

  2. I too agree with this "yahoo" news claim, although i don't know if it will really take 25 years. Its obvious that the ice is melting and at the rate its doing so, the polar bears will not be able to adapt. We've already done enough damage to this species from global warming that i don't believe the effects can be easily reversed. Even if we were to stop all emissions and pollution of the environment, the harm that has already done wont be so easily fixed. Although, if we do work to stop global warming i think the polar bears will be able to bounce back, but it definitely wont be a quick fix.

I would like to agree with Macadocious, as well as this Yahoo news claim that this is indeed an ongoing problem which we should make priority to find a solution.

Scientists speculate polar bear extinction is a real possibility. Some facts indicate that their habitat is melting faster than expected, climate change being the culprit. Although they can adapt to subtle changes, specie adaptation is not possible because the pace of climate change is too great. Over time, their population will suffer a rapid decline. Some studies have information suggesting that as much as two thirds of the current population could disappear by 2050.

To save them from becoming further endangered, attacks on their habitat must be addressed. Extinction will be the result if we do not act now. Some conservation organizations have suggested transplanting small populations to Antarctica where a similar life cycle can be attained instead of captivity.

I would like to point out, as Mac said, that this is shameful to our national pride! These animals aren’t only situated on our currency but live right here in our backyards. It’s disgusting we’re not doing more to protect them. WWF is a fantastic organization, doing their part by supporting science, as well as preventing human to bear contact. In response, the federal government is proposing to protect more than 200,000 square miles of critical habitat for the beleaguered Arctic animals. In my opinion this is the least we can do for an animal which means so much to our nation.

  4. I do agree with this yahoo claim. I think it is not an opinion, but rather a fact that polar bears are heading for extinction. This has to do with Climate Change, which is a cause of the ice melting. Ice melting is a huge problem for polar bears, blocking transportation. Polar bears are not able to swim very far; they rely on ice to rest at. But not only are polar bears in danger, but all other polar species. If one species becomes extinct, that damages the food chain. It can be a ripple effect, where animals depending on Polar Bears will also become endangered. If we do try to reverse this situation, it will not be easy. We have caused such a big problem that it will take a lot of work, money, and patience. I do think that it is an important problem which we must try to help.

After reading this article, I agree with this "yahoo" news claim. I agree with Shona's comment as well, because the ice is melting which is eliminating transportation for the polar bears and no transportation means no food like she said. I do believe that polar bears are heading for extinction and us humans are fully responsible for it. We are the reason why there is climate change and his climate change is increasing the temperature around the world and is melting the ice in all northern polar regions. Polar bears are threatened because of how we as humans treat the earth and the environment. If we don't do anything to change this, the polar bears will in fact be extinct over time.

As we know, polar bears live in a very specific habitat. They need the cold, snow an ice of the polar regions. That is why they are called "polar bears" and not "summer bears.(1)" Polar bears are an animal that is at the top of the food chain and there are no other animals that would harm or threaten them in the northern polar regions. That is why it must be humans fault that the polar bears are now an endangered species.

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the frozen Arctic Sea ice. The polar bears rely on sea ice to survive, using it to pass between forrest dens and hunting grounds where they prey on seals (2). Global warming is the biggest reason why the sea ice is melting. The reasons for global warming are carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants, carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline for transportation, rise in sea levels worldwide, etc (3). These three reasons are ones that we humans have a lot of control over and that are huge factors on the melting ice.

I think that if we humans do our best to stop climate change then polar bears won't be endangered. I'm not saying saying we can change all of these issues causing climate change in one day, but if we eliminate even the little problems first we will see a big difference. I also feel that if we don't eliminate these problems and the polar bears do become extinct, I can cause problems with other animals in the northern polar regions. These polar bears today of some of the last of a dying breed ad we can change that.

  6. This is my weekly post: I totally agree with yahoo, day by day more polar bears are dying because of Climate Change. With the planet continuing to warm at the poles, polar bear’s habitats decrease rapidly. They are no longer able to hunt because most of that ice is melted and the seals(main food) just stays out in the open water. The main causes of this extinction include; pollution, hunting, over fishing, etc;, we as humans have to learn to live with nature in harmony while still supporting ourselves. If we don’t stop pumping chemicals, CO2, and whatever other horrible things we put into the air, because this is causing our planet to heat up and melt many of the glaciers and the poles as well. For example like Mr. Forsyth told us, when he went to a glacier when he was a kid and it was huge, and when he returned a couple of years ago it the only part left of the glacier was on the tip -top of the mountain. I think they can be reversed by turning away from fossil fuels, and peruse green energy such as: Wind, Solar, Geothermal, and Hydrogen. If we learn to live like generous people, instead of stripping the earth with all its natural resources and polluting it we might be able to change this. I believe we have to do this because it’s the only planet we got.

  7. If we don't start taking a serious look at how we are changing the ice levels at the poles then this yahoo news claim will come true and we will lose the polar bears forever.
