Now France has closed 20 of their embassies in Muslim countries after the publication of a cartoon featuring a naked Mohammed.
Your thoughts on this matter of these embassy closures? Are they part of a bigger picture or simply isolated events?

For the time being, I believe it was an intelligent move on the part of the French to close down their embassies for at least a little while After a French magazine fueled the fires associated with the cartoons depicting Mohammed in a negative light, their shutting down may help to save them from being protested against, having their buildings destructed and in extreme cases, people being killed. Perhaps in time, once the people in those regions have calmed down and have had a chance to reflect on this event the French can consider reopening their embassies but for now, it is a safe move to remain closed.

I believe that the French closing its embassy’s so soon after the release of the cartoon depicting Mohammed in a bad way may seem like the French are getting hostile toward Muslim people. Muslim people may see the French as joining America in its recent anti-Muslim media (The innocents of Muslims). I think that the Muslim people should understand that it’s not the country making these pictures and video and that we all do not agree with the views and ideas of a few individuals. I can feel a tension rising in the political world.

Winter is coming, indeed.
DeleteAlthough I do agree with Kiran about the closing of France's embassys, this has all begun because of the ignorance of this magazine in the first place. It has been brought up that instead of closing the embassies, they should have just closed the magazine that offended everyone. The muslim community has a very large impact on this planet. Not only has this magazine done this one time, last year this building was firebombed for releasing an edition that mocked radical Islam. This magazine has stated many times that they feel no regret about the things that they have said. Looking at this however, if the muslim community attacked the christian religion or any one of our countries for example Canada or France, our countries would be feeling the same rage. I think that these isolated situations are a part of something much larger. Some communities, after 911, are incapable of looking at the muslim community as anything but 'wrong' and 'dangerous'. This is not the case at all, they are simply sticking up for their religion, leader, and country.

I do agree with Mimi and Kiran about France closing their embassies. I believe it was the safest thing for them to do, especially since three United Statues embassies were attacked very recently for an Anti-Muslim film. However, I think France could have dealt with this issue better, and apologized to the Muslim community. The Prime Minster of France keeps making comments saying that he would like to stress his disapproval of what has happened, and that he never would have allowed it if he had known. With this being said, I feel like he should have at least said sorry publicly to them, and than he should have taken all copies of the magazines off the shelves. Not only that, he should forbid them from printing more copies off to sell. Also, I believe he should consider if that company should be shut down, because it is the second time they have printed highly offensive pictures of Muhammad. Not only Muhammad, but other highly respected figures as well. I believe one of the biggest reasons this has happened, is because of ignorance. The company previously got in trouble last year for a similar thing, but than go and do it again at a sensitive time for the Muslims. This shows nothing but ignorance and hatred for this group of people, which makes this incident part of a larger issue, just like Mimi previously stated. I believe that for these issues to stop, there needs to be a limit on freedom of speech. Racist and hateful comments/pictures should not be accepted anymore in freedom of speech, and until there is a law saying this and consequences put in place, these issues will not stop and will probably become worse.

This is my post.
ReplyDeleteShutting down the embassies was a smart move by the French government which is why I agree with Kiran's comment. Islam has the right to be angry about the photos “Charlie Hebdo” put out in their newspaper Wednesday morning. Many Muslims consider the representation of Allah or Muhammad offensive. Muhammad being the prophet of the Islam religion is obviously someone important to the Muslim culture. People have the right to feel wrathful and angry about this situation, especially in the time period we are in today. The French government which urged Hebdo not to print the images said it was temporarily shutting down premises including embassies and schools in 20 countries on Friday when protests sometimes break after Muslim prayers (1). Personally I don’t think that schools should have been temporarily shut down because of the pictures because those institutions had nothing to do with it. However, government did the right thing by shutting down the embassies that had something to do with the pictures. A legal complaint has been filed against a French satirical magazine which published obscene cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The complaint accuses the magazine of inciting hatred (2). This isn't the first time "Charlie Hebdo" company has published something that another culture finds offensive. Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices were firebombed last November after it published a mocking caricature of Muhammad. In 2005, Danish cartoons of the Prophet sparked a wave of violent protests across the Muslim world that killed at least 50 people. This company should have a more severe punishment because of there actions, and because it wasn't the first time (3).

I believe the French government did nothing wrong they advised the magazine to not publish the cartoon, and the magazine went ahead a did just that. Even though it was a wrong thing to do. If anything they should be punishing the magazine company. I think that the French government is over reacting, with shutting down their embassies in 20 different Muslim countries. Why effect a mass population of Muslim's when it was a French company that started it. They should take matters in to their own hands and make that magazine company pay for what they did. French government should keep the embassies open, take responsibility for the magazine's action. Let the muslim population be angry. When this all dies down I think they should the French government should "take care" of this company.

I think that the magazine should be free to post whatever they want as long as they are not actively condoning hateful acts or crime, the real crime here is the fact that their building was firebombed, that just proves any points they are trying to make because the people that did that are savage enough to resort to these criminal acts
